Diabetes And Your Diet

March 9th, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Health | No Comments »

If you are like me you probably thought diabetes is one of those things you have or don’t have; nothing could be further from the truth because diabetes is now the biggest threat to health in the developed world and we are eating ourselves into it because of poor diet.

First question is how prevalent is diabetes?
Using Australia as an example that has a total population of around 20 million inhabitants, in the last full year official figures show 70,000 people were diagnosed with diabetes during the year. That is equal to one extra person diagnosed every seven minutes 24/7.

At present 700,000 people are diagnosed with having diabetes and a conservative figure indicate that for each person diagnosed there is another that is not diagnosed but does suffer from diabetes. that is 1.4 million sufferers out of a total population of 20 million. - More than 5% and growing by the day. The organization Diabetes Australia forecast that by the year 2010 the number of sufferers could be close to 10% of population. This rate of increase is happening throughout the developed world and is caused by lack of exercise and poor diet. We could be quite cruel here and say that people are queuing to shorten their lifespan because diabetes does reduce your lifespan.

The answer to this epidemic is in the hands of each of us. We must exercise more and be more conscious of what we eat. Attention to diet should start from a very young age; in particular we should concentrate on serving sizes and avoiding fatty foods. Yes that does include every child’s favorite burger and fries. Once a month does little harm if the children are active, once a week causes damage even if they are active.

We all need to be conscious of seven servings of fruit and vegetables each day in our diet and also the need to back a good diet with reasonable exercise, like walking. People most at risk of type 2 diabetes, the most common, are overweight and do not exercise. They may have high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol, if you fit this category ask your doctor to check for diabetes next time you visit.

I saved the scariest fact for last: The total number of people in Australia with diabetes or “pre-diabetes” is 3.2 million or 15.1% of the total population. Each of these people will have a reduced lifespan.

Improvements of the new iPod video

March 2nd, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Technology | No Comments »

The improvements of the new iPod video concern not only the dimensions, but also the battery life, the quality sound and, above all, the possibility of watching the favorite music videos and TV shows.

As regarding the exterior aspect, one may say that this may be the most handsome model of an iPod even made – a bigger display, thinner, and about 45 percent less space than the original iPod. The main idea is less space and more features and if it wasn’t the case of a human made object, you may have said that the magic is called evolution. The two models of the video iPod – 30 and 60 GB – are thinner and look very fashionable, having an attractive exterior aspect.

The new iPod has other improvements, especially in the case of the battery life so that the enjoyment and satisfaction would be complete, having five hours life more than before. This means that the new iPod has 20 hours of battery life and taking into account the advantage of watching music videos, TV shows, cartoons, photos and other videos, this aspect is more than welcomed.

The improvements also concern the memory of the new iPod and the good news is that you may have 15,000 songs on it and even a full-color album up to 25,000 photos. The 2.5-inch color display is also of great help while watching either the photos or the videos. In this way, you may take all your favorite music with you and you may still have room for your favorite music videos, TV shows or cartoons. If you are a fan of the latest ABC hits like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives”, you may also take them with you, as even this thing is possible with the new iPod video. There are also Pixar shorts and some Disney available for the new iPod for your children or for your childish tastes.

Some other improvements regard the quality of changing the options and the touch-sensitive surface is the great achievement for the new iPod video. In this way, you may access the music, video and photo memory easily and you may also create a rating for your favorites. The options of play and pause, fast-forward and rewind are not a problem anymore. You may even launch slideshows with your favorite photos.

You may also benefit from the iTunes Music Store with over 2 million songs available for all tastes and ages, 2,000 videos, ABC or Disney TV shows. You may downlowd them and then sync them into your iPod. Besides, with the help of special cables you may see the photos or the videos on your TV set. There is another option for all these activities - you may use the universal dock and the remote control.

These amazing improvements may be the source of endless joys and satisfaction for you on the road or in other situations when you need company. Besides, you may also look up an e-mail address, you may check the calendar of your activities, find out the time in another part of the country or particular city. These possibilities may conquer the heart of any person in this world and that is why the new iPod video may be a great choice for a gift for the beloved ones.

Moreover, this special toy may fit any age and any tastes and may be the perfect gift for any member of your family. The handy options, the nice design and great improvements may be the source of endless joys for any person who doesn’t like to spend time with no activity. The wide and bright screen, the touch-sensitive surface, the longer battery life, the great amount of options and possibilities make the new iPod video the best iPod ever made. And there is still room for other important and interesting changes, and that is why the designers are open to any useful suggestions.

15 Lanzarote Beaches - Arrecife

February 24th, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Travel | No Comments »

Arrecife is the smallest of the islands seven municipalities and house the islands new capital (having taken over the mantel from Teguise at the end of the 18th century). Like neighbouring San Bartholme, there are relatively few beaches in this area, although the two that follow are well a visit.

Arrecife (the name originates from the abundance of reefs and islets along its short coast), has a skyline totally dominated by the islands tallest building (the Grand Hotel) which you may have seen during your approach to the airport. The first beach is known as El Reducto, a picturesque European Union, ‘Blue Flag’ beach set in an almost enclosed bay and measuring half a kilometre by 45m wide with calm waters and fine golden sands.
To one end of the beach you will find a park with palm trees and benches designed as a monument of a ship wreck. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, this beach is for you as it is frequented only by locals rather than tourists.

As you would expect from a ‘city beach’, El Reducto boasts excellent services from its coastal promenade including showers, public telephones, bar/restaurants, wheelchair access , parking and is easily reached by guaguas (autobus). One of the major attractions of this beach is the “Charco de San Gines” lagoon, a natural pond formed by sea water housing a collection of small boats belonging to inshore fishermen, who live around the lagoon.

The beach was landscaped in conjunction with the Cesar Manrique who grew up in this area and who held his first exhibition in the San gines Lagoon area.
If you’re planning a trip here or to neighbouring El Cable Beach (below), check to find out if there are any festivals going on at the time as these offer a unique authentic insight into canarian life on the island.
The second and final beach in Arrecife is just along the costs and is known as El Cable. It measures 315m.long and 18m wide and consists of fine golden sand. El Cable is windy with moderate waves which makes it good for windsurfing and be found next to the development of the same name.
The beach can be prone to local pollution which puts it off limits from time to time. Services include showers, public telephones and bars/restaurants. It is easy to park locally.

Tips For Buying Dog Food

February 6th, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Shopping | No Comments »

It is not enough for dogs to have a full stomach after every meal. Besides a non-sedentary lifestyle, pets need proper nutrition in order to be healthy, happy and their coats soft and glossy. The cost of dog food and its brand is only important if dogs can read or pay for his meal. The easiest and best way to find out which food is best for man’s best friend is to observe how their response is to the chow they take in.

The following are tips that one should remember in feeding dog any kibbles, nibbles or whatever kinds of treat.

• Chocolate is lethal to dogs.

Specifically the dark chocolate kind. The major components methylxanthine alkaloids and theobromine in a regular chocolate is digested & excreted by humans in as little as 3 hours but the same compounds when ingested by dogs stays inside them for 18 hours. This has been proven to be fatal. Symptoms of chocolate dog poisoning include vomiting, excessive urination, hyperactivity, diarrhea, followed by seizure, coma, and death.

• Read the label.

Dogs should have a diet rich in meat. When purchasing canned foods, look for chicken, turkey meat, pork meals or other animal by products as these keep the dog’s coat smooth and healthy. Dogs prefer foods which contain high vegetable protein levels because these are easily digestible and are a great source of energy.

• Don’t give a dog a bone!

Contrary to the popular nursery song, feeding bones to dogs is not a good idea. Small soft bones gnawed and eaten by dogs feel like splinters inside their throat causing them to choke. Remember, dogs have short digestive tracts. They also have no saliva amylase, an enzyme that is used to pre-digest starch.

• Dog food supplements are unnecessary…

…only if one is sure that their dog receives a regular intake of complete and balanced food nutrients. Good sources of carbohydrates include rice, corn, oatmeal, wheat. However, a highly specialized nutrition is only necessary if dogs do not get enough physical activity or are currently undergoing a stressful routine change.

• Raw fish and eggs are a no-no.

Consistent consumption of raw eggs make a dog’s skin breakout. In canine terms - since eggs diminish the biotin available in their body – dermatitis and hair loss are its usual effects. Raw fish meanwhile results in thiamine-deficiency in a dog. Its effects usually are loss of appetite, abnormal posture, weakness and in some cases death.

A good real estate broker

January 28th, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Real Estate | No Comments »

Real estate is a popular investment avenue. A lot of people go for real estate investing. Some people follow real estate as their prime job. So you have real estate brokers, real estate investors, real estate attorneys and others who thrive mainly on the real estate industry. However, there are others who don’t follow real estate investing as a profession but still want to invest in real estate (as it is an attractive avenue for investment). For such people, getting a good real estate broker can make a big difference between a good deal and not-so-good one.

So how does one choose a good real estate broker?

The first thing to look for is the reputation of the real estate broker. A real estate broker who has good reputation would have earned it over a period of time by helping buyers get the property of their choice (and as per their needs), at the same time getting a good price for the property seller. In fact, experience is the second important thing to look for in a real estate broker. Bad real estate brokers can’t exist for long (since the bad news about anyone travels much faster than the good news). So experience is a good measure because then you know that the real estate broker hasn’t done anything so bad as to throw them out of business. A good real estate broker will not act just as the salesperson for the seller (from whom the real estate broker is due to receive commission/fee when the deal materializes) but will also pay heed to the needs of the buyer. Also, a good real estate broker will normally have a lot of properties available for sale at any point of time. Good real estate brokers will generally have a small team of people working in an organized way to get the deal closed between a buyer and a seller (making both parties happy at the same time). Good real estate brokers will group the properties in a way that is easy to understand e.g. group them on the basis of location, grouping them on the basis of price, grouping them on the basis of house types etc. for the buyer. A good real estate broker will also offer advice to the seller on small repairs or things that can get help them in getting an even better price for their property. And a good real estate broker will patiently listen to the requirements of the buyers and point them to the properties that best fit their requirements (instead of just showing them the list and asking to choose one).
Checking with friends/family that have previously used the services of a good real estate broker can sometimes help you in getting a good real estate broker fairly quickly.

Playing from the Sidelines

January 19th, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Recreation & Sports | No Comments »

If you are like most adults, you want to make sure that your players and your children succeed in the games that they are playing. When they win, you see how much better they feel about themselves, and you can see the potential that you know they have really coming out. Even if your intentions are at their best when you are working with your child in a sport, you want to make sure that you know just how far to go.

Every child that is playing a sport will need the moral support from both parents and coaches. However, there is a thin line between offering the moral support and stepping over it to expecting the children and youth to do specific things. As soon as you, as a parent or coach, begin to expect things from the child and tell them that they need to do better or win the game, it causes the game to work in reverse. Instead of the child gaining the self-esteem and better image of themselves that they need to, they reverse and think worse of themselves.

If you want to make sure that you are not stepping over the thin line, you can keep a check list for how you are responding to the player or child. The first item to check is to see how involved you become in the games. You will first want to ask yourself how much time you are spending on the child’s sport. You will also want to see how emotionally involved you become in the child’s activities. This is especially important if you see yourself pushing your child to be better, become more committed or play more games.

If you are working on helping your child to develop a physical activity and to stay active in a sport, it is important to know what your role is. You will want to make sure to hold an attitude towards the game that is positive and helps your child to gain new abilities. By doing this, you will be helping them recognize that the sport is fun and simply is giving them physical and mental abilities. The number one rule for any coach or parent to remember is that it is just a game.

Which Grill Should You Buy, Charcoal Or Gas?

January 12th, 2009

Posted by supervisor in Entertainment | No Comments »

If you are considering purchasing a new grill, or barbecue, you will be faced with a multitude of options to choose between. However, there is one choice which you will need to make fairly quickly in your quest for the perfect grill for you. That decision is whether to buy a charcoal or gas grill.

Both charcoal and gas grills have advantages over each other depending on what you are looking for and how you intend to use it. However, the good news is that they both produce food which has been found to have very little difference in taste. Whether you choose the gas or charcoal version you can rest assured that they will both have the capability to produce great tasting fare.

For many, a barbecue is not a proper barbecue if it does not involve cooking over hot coals. This can take a long time to be at the optimum cooking temperature and can be difficult to master, and in addition there are ashes to be dealt with once the cooking is over. However, the primal instinct in many people (particularly men!) makes the charcoal grill appeal to them as they are required to start and tend the fire for the duration of the time for which they are cooking. In addition, many feel that cooking over coals gives the food a distinctive taste and smell which you do not get with a gas grill. However, as mentioned previously, this has not been found to be the case.

A gas grill can make life less complicated. The flames are produced at the touch of a button and the temperature can be controlled at the turn of a knob. This is more like cooking over a traditional kitchen cooker, only outside. A gas grill also removes the debris once the cooking is over as there are no coals to clean up.

As you can see, both types of grill have their advantages. However, it is important to think about your use of your grill before making your decision. If you plan to use it infrequently you may prefer a charcoal grill as they are less costly. A gas grill will cost more to buy, but if you are going to use it regularly it will become more efficient over time. For the newcomer to the grill, a charcoal grill may be the most sensible option. If you find you are using it a lot and it is becoming expensive to buy new coals you will then have the opportunity to upgrade to a gas barbecue if you wish. If you splash out for a gas grill immediately you may find that if you use it infrequently it will be an unnecessary expense that you need not have made.

Whichever you choose, there is little between the two types of grill in terms of the quality of the food cooked on them. Make your decision wisely and your grill is sure to be enjoyed on many occasions over time and makes a great addition to any summer evening.

Data Recovery Procedures

December 12th, 2008

Posted by supervisor in Computer&Internet | No Comments »

No matter who you are, where you work, or what type of computer you use - your computer data is always as risk. With viruses, power surges, thunderstorms, natural disasters, human mistakes, and hackers around, the threats are always real. To be on the safe side, you’ll need to back up your files and keep doing it on a regular basis. In the event of your hard drive failing, you’ll need data recovery - which is the only option available.

Before you travel down that long road of data recovery, there are some things to keep in mind. If you are using your computer and a program starts to act funny, you should shut things down immediately. You may also hear some very odd sounds as well, which is the first sign that your hard driving is working overtime. If you shut your computer down immediately at this point, you may prevent data loss from happening. If you don’t shut your computer down and allow the failing hard drive to continue running, it is only a matter of time before it destroys itself - which will ultimately result in the loss of data.

If this happens, and you lose all of your data, you should never try to fix the hard drive yourself unless you know exactly what to do. At this stage, professional data recovery services aren’t just a luxury - they are something you must have. The process for data recovery is time consuming, and requires both tools and a clean work environment. Trying to repair a hard drive on your own is very challenging, and could end up making matters far worse if you don’t know what you are doing.

Even though there are software out there for data recovery, you shouldn’t use them unless you know what you are doing. With most hard drive problems being very intricate, software can do more harm than good. Even though companies may claim that their software will fix the problem and, retrieve your data, you should always use caution and simply avoid the use of do it yourself software.

To be on the safe side with your hard drive and retrieve the data that you lost, you should always turn to a local data recovery service. This way, you’ll know that your hard drive is in good hands and it will be fixed the right way. Professional services can fix nearly any hard drive problem, and recover any type of data. In some cases, your hard drive may be beyond repair, even for professional data recovery specialists. If this happens, you should be prepared to buy a new hard drive - and count your blessings that you thought to back up your data in advance.
